It’s always great to simply relax and have some fun with your horse, but what about teaching them some tricks during this time? Most horse owners think that tricks are too complicated or would take too much time for the horse to learn.
In fact, nothing could be further from the truth, and as you are about to discover, there are some tricks out there that any horse can learn. Best of all, these tricks are also a great way for your horse to do some stretching exercises and become more active.
Here are 3 simple tricks to get you started:
The lift your foot trick
One of the main benefits of the lift your foot trick is that you can easily get your horse to lift its foot when you are trying to give it a clean.
So how do you go about training your horse to lift its foot on command? Well, it all starts with lightly pinching the tendon at the back of the leg until the horse lifts their leg up. Once this happens then keep the leg raised for approximately 20 seconds before placing it back on the floor. Repeat the same with the other legs.
Keep doing this over the next few days and slowly work in something that the horse can associate with lifting their leg such as saying a specific word or patting them on a certain part of their body. Pretty soon this will become an automatic response and they will lift their foot on command.
The take a bow trick
Many people are impressed with the take a bow trick, and best of all, it acts as a great stretching exercise for the horse. Luckily, it’s incredibly easy to teach your horse this trick, so you should be able to get it done in the least amount of time possible.
In order to start make sure you have a few treats on hand and then right before you present your horse with the treat say the word bow. Keep doing this over the next few days, and each time move your hand a little bit lower so the horse has to reach slightly lower.
In no time at all your horse will bow on command. Just make sure you always give them a reward for doing so.
The hug me trick
Another simple trick that any horse can learn is the hug me trick. Let’s face it, every horse owner likes to get a hug from their horse and this is a way to make sure that there is always plenty of affection in the stables.
Again, make sure you have plenty of treats to get started with this trick, as what you will be doing is standing at the side of your horse while facing away.
While in this position hold the treat out in front of the horse and then slowly bring it around so the horse needs to literally hug your body with it’s face to get the treat. As long as you have plenty of treats then there will always be plenty of hugs!
